London calling ..line's a little busy

Capital - John Lanchester

Capital starts extremely promising and it really is enjoyable as a read, but it lacks character development and loses its proper London temperament along the way. The closure to the story comes through the employment of a deus ex machina almost, which makes you wonder: at the end of the day, which aspect is important here if any? the plot, the metropolis ambience, the people, the prose, none? However, its moments of brilliance are drenched in sharp humour and wit and that means 2,5 stars for me.
